How I work
My studio is a room with a view of the Pacific. I paint with the door open — fresh air, whatever's coming through the speakers, and usually more questions than answers when I start.
I work from photographs and memory, but I try not to let either one be the boss. I'll choose a figure — someone whose posture or expression caught something I wanted to hold onto — and then let the paint take me somewhere. I don't plan compositions so much as discover them. Layers go down, things get covered, something unexpected emerges and I follow it. It's not so different from writing a song.
The figures in my work are often still, caught mid-thought. That's usually where I am too.

Music 〰️
Making music and making paintings come from the same impulse in me — paying close attention to something and trying to translate it. These are the projects that have shaped that instinct.

About Hey Anna
Hey Anna was an indie pop band I co-founded in Brooklyn in 2010 with my sisters and our drummer. We released EPs and an LP, toured Japan and North America, and were a fixture of the NYC music scene for most of the decade — Northside Festival, CMJ, Rooftop Films. Our songs ended up on MTV and in a couple of indie films. The band went on hiatus in 2018, but the years of writing and performing shaped how I think about making anything, including paintings.
